This personal process project explored the healing qualities of art therapy and the Native American practice of the medicine wheel specifically the Cherokee practice of 'Ayeli' (pronounced 'Ah-yea-lee') which means to find balance or center. During my graduate studies, I experienced serious illness, and prior to that I had rheumatoid arthritis for 11 years. My life was out of balance. Native Americans, as well as, many indigenous people believe that with illness there is an imbalance of body, mind, and spirit. Therefore, I delved into the process of the practice of 'Ayeli' and the medicine wheel, and with that, art and psychotherapy were utilized as a means of digging deep into my psyche to shake loose whatever needed to be discarded or a lesson to learn. The Cherokee practice of 'Ayeli' was developed and used as a tool to promote wellness in group work. I decided to examine this modality on an individual basis despite indigenous teachings that true healing happens within the group process. A chapter is devoted to each of the four sacred directions of the medicine wheel, and introspection and reflection through journaling, artwork and psychotherapy was processed.
