This research study examines the relationship between verbal and non-verbal language to understand the significance of |code switching| with bilingual clients in a therapeutic setting. Code switching has been defined as a procedure by which a multilingual individual alternates between one language and another, based on the content and context of the conversation (Grosjean, 1982). As a bilingual art therapist, I utilize a heuristic approach and interview studies to examine the meaning of code switching in the therapeutic setting. I examine how code switching could be supported by art therapists; its effect on clients' ability to express themselves; and its influence on the therapeutic alliance and affective closeness. By engaging in a process of self-reflection to understand the role of code switching in my life and its significance on the therapeutic alliances with my clients, I offer an experiential perspective that supplements information gathered through interview studies. Structured interviews with bilingual art therapists are informed by theoretical constructs from linguistics, counseling and art therapy. Interviews, journaling, and art in response to the information gathered, allow for an identification of recurring themes and shared experiences. I argue that, due to the limited number of bilingual art therapists and increasing numbers of people speaking a language other than English at home, cultural competence in relation to code switching is important to our training to provide a space that is welcoming to all languages. Using concrete examples from lived experience and research, I propose that code switching is not only a verbal switching of languages, but also a means for building connection. I conclude this study with a set of recommendations for emerging and practicing art therapists to keep in mind when working with bilingual clients.
