Art therapy has a distinct advantage for non-verbal children in comparison with other therapeutic modalities that rely on talking. Communication expands beyond verbal speaking and occurs through many modalities. Exploring different methods of communication allows for clinicians to choose the best modality for each student. Art therapy with nonverbal children utilizes these diverse forms of communication methods and sticks with the child's authentic process. Visual symbols, metaphors, and sensory explorations all concretize the child's experience in their environment and encourage the growth of communicative language regardless of verbality. This paper documents experiences of nonverbal children in an art therapy social skills group at an elementary school in southwestern Pennsylvania. The author of this paper, the art therapy intern, documented the art making experiences of two students who were non-verbal communicators. A review of literature will be used to familiarize the reader with concepts of communication, the Expressive Therapies Continuum, art making as a form of communication, and the different diagnosis encountered onsite. This information will be applied to case studies which focus on art making as a form of language. Art making on site provided a cathartic release of energy and incorporated a new methodology for the students to communicate.
