The dominant discourse around teen motherhood focuses on teen pregnancy as a social problem that should be prevented and suggests that teen mothers are inadequate parents. In response to this perspective, my research aims to advocate for young mothers by sharing the multiple stories of resiliency that were illuminated during home-based art therapy with five low-income, Latina teen mothers. Relevant literature was reviewed in the following areas: teen motherhood, art therapy with teen mothers, and home-based art therapy. Taking a client-centered, ethnographic approach, relationships surfaced as a central theme in my work. The following seven types of relationships naturally emerged: mother-parental, mother-partner, mother-child, mother-school, mother-substance, mother-faith, and mother-self. Examining how these relationships were explored during long-term art therapy, this inquiry suggests that, rather than depending on social generalizations, one must look deeper into individual stories to best understand the experiences of teen mothers and how they can defy stigma. The study further discusses the role that art played in highlighting resiliency, the benefits of providing home-based services, and the power dynamics that were intrinsic to my practice. This research serves to complicate the prevalent literature on teen motherhood and offer new insight into art therapy with teen mothers and home-based art therapy practices. Furthermore, it contributes to a new discourse on teen motherhood that focuses on empowerment rather than prevention.
