For the sociopolitically marginalized, visibility itself is a subversive political act. It is necessary for practitioners of art therapy to commit to promoting visibility, particularly because we work with individuals whose life experiences are precluded by dominant discourse. Given the sensitivity of power dynamics inherent in therapeutic relationships, it is alarming to note the lack of critical awareness in art therapy literature concerning individuals with marginalized identities. In this paper, I argue that attempts to create visibility with clients, and with one another as practitioners, must be contextualized within feminist, antiracist, and queer theories in order to circumvent the replication of oppressive power practices. After briefly introducing contemporary feminist and queer theories, I use these theories as a lens through which to examine several art therapy articles about marginalized sexual and gender identities. As a framework for the practice of art therapy, queer theory takes into consideration the existence of multiple identities for marginalized clients and practitioners. Queer theory's recognition of the perpetually shifting nature of identity politics underscores the necessity of ongoing dialog surrounding the ways underrepresented peoples articulate their identities.
