Abstract: In this study, art therapy was used to test the hypothesis that the mandala group would have higher self-esteem than the alternative art tasks group. All subjects were divided into two groups (N=24). There were 12 subjects in the mandala group and 12 subjects in the alternative art tasks group. Each subject was administered the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (1965) at the start of the 4 week study and upon the completion of the fourth week of group work to determine the use of the art therapy methods, specifically the mandala as an effective tool in art therapy. A one-way independent groups ANOVA was used to analyze the data. No significant (p\u003e .05) mean differences were found between the alternative art tasks group and the mandala art group with respect to the self-esteem scores; however, the scores for the mandala group were higher than the scores for both pre-test and post-test scores of the alternative art tasks group. The mandala group scores were also slightly higher in the post-test compared to the pre- test scores. This research study indicates that although the scores between the alternative art tasks group and the mandala group were not significantly different, results proved that the mandala group did have higher self-esteem scores than the alternative art tasks group. Additional research is recommended to determine how art therapy methods effect self-esteem.
